BOISE, Idaho ? The University of Idaho track and field teams got the Western Athletic Conference Championships started on the right foot Wednesday in the heptathlon, as the Vandals sit at second through fourth in the event.
“I thought it went great. In our meeting last night, we talked about getting ourselves into position to be in second through fifth and we're really close to that right now going into day two,” Co-Head Coach Yogi Teevens said. “We're even stronger across the board in the day-two events, so I'm pretty excited.
“I think we're right where we need to be.”
Sophomore Darcy Collins led the way for Idaho with a personal-best first-day score of 3,019 for second place after four events. Collins, who finished fourth in the event last season as a freshman, ran a season-best 14.65 in the 100m hurdles and high-jumped 5-5 to help give her the score.
Senior Molly Burt currently sits in third with a score of 2,943. Burt came up just short of her first-day personal best of 3,005 from last year's meet, where she finished third.
Sophomore Lindsey Goodman benefitted from a lifetime-best 200m time of 24.94 to sit in fourth after day one with a first-day personal best score of 2,853. Freshman Alice Draser, who entered the meet a little banged up according to Teevens, finished the first day with a score of 2,770.
The second day of the heptathlon kicks off on Friday with the long jump starting at 1:30. The final three events of the heptathlon include the long jump, javelin throw and 800m.
