DENVER University of Idaho junior Almudena Sanz earned Western Athletic Conference Womens Tennis Player of the Week honors for April 15-21, 2013, the league announced Monday.
A junior from Oviedo, Spain, Sanz won at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles in Idahos only match of the week, a 5-2 win over Utah State, helping Idaho win its fourth match in five tries. Sanz overcame a 6-2 loss in the first set at No. 2 singles to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 and helped Idaho earn the doubles point with a tough 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles, despite playing on the road and at elevation.
It is the second such honor in her career and first of the season.
The Vandals finished the regular season 12-11 and 5-4 in WAC play and are the No. 5 seed heading into this weeks WAC tournament in Denver. The Vandals will face No. 4 UT Arlington at 9 a.m. (PT) on April 25 in the quarterfinals.
