MOSCOW, Idaho – Women's basketball's Geraldine McCorkell and men's hoops' Chad Sherwood have been named the Idaho Vandals Athletes of the Week, following impressive performances in the opening weekend of Big Sky play.
Both teams got out to 2-0 starts in league play, taking down North Dakota and Northern Colorado. The Vandal women will host Eastern Washington on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m., while the men will travel to Cheney to take on the Eagles at 12:05 p.m.
McCorkell takes home her second Idaho Athlete of the Week honor of the season. Over the weekend, McCorkell averaged 18.5 points and 6.5 rebounds while shooting 46 percent from the floor and 50 percent from range. McCorkell, a 6-0 sophomore from Melbourne, Australia, recorded her fourth career double-double (17-10) against Northern Colorado, including nine points in the fourth quarter alone, as the Vandals moved to 2-0 in Big Sky play. McCorkell has been having an incredible season, as she leads the Vandals at 14.1 points per game and is third on the squad with 6.1 boards per contest.
Chad Sherwood shot lights-out over the weekend, helping lift the Vandals to a pair of wins. In the conference opener at North Dakota, Sherwood scored 16 points on just eight field attempts as the Vandals won a close one down the stretch. He got his first career start on Saturday at Northern Colorado and made the most of it, going 6-of-8 from beyond the arc and finishing with 18 points. With the Vandals down, 60-59, late in the game, Chad Sherwood drained back-to-back 3's to put Idaho back on top and effectively sealed the win. Over his last five games, Chad Sherwood is averaging 13.2 points per game and is shooting better than 61 percent from range.
