PULLMAN, Wash.—The Vandal women's tennis team fought to a 5-2 decision over former conference rival Seattle U on Thursday. Idaho took the match in come from behind fashion after losing out on the doubles point.
Seattle U got a quick start in doubles with a 6-4 win on the No. 1 court. The Vandal duo of Ana Batiri and Lucia Badillos scored a 6-3 win on the No. 3 court. The doubles point went down to the wire on the No. 2 court. Madison Maloney and Barbara Carey outlasted Maria Tavares and Rita Bermudez, 7-6, to put the Redhawks up early.
The Silver and Gold quickly responded in singles play. Marianna Petrei, returning to the No. 1 position, tied the match up at 1-1 with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Michelle Lui. Seattle U answered back with a 6-3, 6-4 win on the No. 2 line, taking a 2-1 match-lead.
The Vandals shutout Seattle U the rest of the way, totaling four straight wins. Batiri drew the Vandals back to even in the match with a 6-3, 6-3 win on the No. 3 court. Tavares had a tight victory over Barbara Carey, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6. Badillos earned the clinching point on the No. 6 court, defeating Kristen Games in straight sets (6-0, 7-6).
Bermudez wrapped up the day with a three-set win (5-7, 6-1, 6-4) over Sari Kwee.
Idaho will be back in Pullman on Friday to take on Big Ski rival Northern Arizona.
