Gonzaga Tops Vandals

SPOKANE—The Vandal women's tennis closed out the weekend with a 4-3 loss to Gonzaga on at The Stevens Center.

"It was not the result we wanted today," head coach Mariana Cobra explained. "Gonzaga is a very good team. It was good to get the doubles point today. I am proud of the way the team is coming around."

Idaho started strong, taking the doubles point. Marianna Petrei and Lucia Badillos conquered Sissi Koehler and Domonique Garley, 6-4, on the No. 3 court. Gonzaga got back to even with a 6-3 win on the No. 1 court. Rita Bermudez and Maria Tavares scored a 7-5 win in No. 2 play, securing the point.

Gonzaga pushed back in the singles play, taking the first four points. Idaho gained singles wins from Petrei and Ana Batiri to close out the day. The two Vandals battled hard, pushing both matches into tiebreakers. Petrei got a 7-6(5), 0-6, 10-4 win over Gonzaga's No. 1 Sophie Whittle. Batiri won in similar fashion on the No. 2 court, 4-6, 7-6(10), 10-6.

The Silver and Gold returns to conference play, hosting Weber State on Saturday, Feb. 27.
