OGDEN, Utah—Freshman Marianna Petrei was named the Big Sky Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week as announced by the conference office on Wednesday.
Petrei, a freshman from Udine, Italy, went 2-0 in singles play as the Vandals topped Utah State and fell in a 4-3 battle to Gonzaga. Facing USU, she dropped a single game in dispatching Ekaterin Tugarinova 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. She teamed with Lucia Badillos at No. 3 doubles and defeated the Aggies' pair of Meghan Lyall and Sabrina Demerath 6-3 to claim the early doubles point on the way to a 6-1 win for Idaho.
At Gonzaga, Petrei and Badillos once again won at No. 3 doubles, topping Sissi Koehler and Domonique Garley, 6-4. That tied doubles play at 1-1, setting up Idaho for a 7-5 decision at court No. 2 to take the early point. After the Zags strung together four wins at lines 3-6 in singles play to clinch the match, Petrei kept battling towards a 7-6 (5), 0-6, 10-4 decision at No. 1 singles over Sophie Whittle.
Petrei is 9-1 in singles play on the season, with her only loss coming in three sets to No. 83 Danika Bashota of Washington State to open the season. She has reeled off nine straight wins since and is 3-0 in league play.
