HOUSTON, Texas - University of Idaho sophomore Maren Seljevold finished seventh in the one-meter diving at the Western Athletic Conference Championship Meet with a 254.00, and Janelle Lucas was second in the B final with a 246.15.
"Our divers started us off in the right direction," coach Mark Sowa said. "Janelle had a nice performance for 10th. Maren was an absolute stud. That was the performance of the night. The good thing is, we only get better as the board gets higher."
While the Vandals are tied for fourth with 77 points, they're just eight points out of second. Northern Arizona is the first-day leader with 147 points to 85 for runner-up Cal State-
Bakersfield.
The Vandals were fifth in the 200 medley relay with Victoria Papke, Cara Jernigan, Maryann Kok and Sami Hendricks combining for a 1:44.19. In the only other final of the day - the 800 free relay, Idaho was fourth with Sarah Mabee-Hall, Erica King, Aileen Pannecouke and Emily Kliewer recording a 7:26.21.
"It was a really good start tonight," Sowa said. "It could've been great but it was good.
"Our relays had some nerves, which always happens on the first night. We showed some speed but over swam some things. Our four freshmen on the 800 got a little overexcited but I loved the way they competed. Overall to be sitting eight points out of second at the end of the first night is fine. We still got a long way to go.”
The meet continues Thursday and concludes Saturday. Live scoring and streaming are available at Championship Central.
