HOUSTON, Texas - Coach Mark Sowa was pleased with the University of Idaho's performances during the second day of the Western Athletic Conference Meet.
The Vandals grabbed points from just about every event to close to within 21 points of second and just 14 out of third. Northern Arizona is the leader after two days with 379.5 with New Mexico State at 196, Cal State-Bakersfield at 189 and Idaho at 175.
"This is certainly going to be a close meet and tonight proved it," Sowa said. "Today, on paper, is our weakest day and we are sitting 21 points out of second place so I think we are in a good position to make a move. Three of our better performers did not even race today because they will race twice tomorrow. We are going to continue to get better and make this thing really interesting by Saturday.”
Vivian Crow had the top individual finish of the day for Idaho with her seventh place in the 200 IM with a time of 2:04.78. Emily Kliewer won the B final in 2:04.46. Erica King added to the point total with her eighth in the 500 free (4:58.87).
"Our IMs were probably the highlight of the evening with Cara (Jernigan) and Emily (Kliewer) having two great swims in the B final and Viv putting together an awesome swim for seventh," Sowa said.
The distance performance was equally impressive to the coach.
"Erica had a very aggressive approach to the 500. It was great to see a freshman in the top eight," Sowa said of King.
Idaho's divers also continued to make their marks. Maren Seljevold was eighth in the A final with a 251.55 with Janelle Lucas second in the B final with a 272.65 and Nikki Imanaka third in the B with a 263.75.
"Our young divers continue to impress," Sowa said.
Also for the Vandals Maryann Kok was seventh in the B final in 23.86.
"The 50 got a lot faster this year as an event but I think Maryann has done a tremendous job and had a solid performance in the B final," Sowa said.
Kok, Sami Hendricks, Aileen Pannecoucke and Kliewer collaborated for a 1:34.42 in the 200 free relay to finish fourth.
"We finished the night off with a good relay, which will get us jump started for two more great days of racing," Sowa said.
The meet continued through Saturday. Live results and streaming are available here.
