RENO, Nev. – Sophomore guard Victor Sanders has been recognized by the league's coaches, earning All-Big Sky Second Team honors.
Sanders led the squad in scoring at 16 points per game during the regular season. He topped 20 points seven times, including four times in conference play. Sanders appeared in 24 games and scored in double-figures 21 times.
Often overlooked, Sanders' talents on the defensive end were just as crucial to Idaho's success. He averaged 1.3 steals per game on the year, the best average on the squad, and recorded 15 blocks, many of the highlight-reel variety.
Sanders missed seven games in conference play due to injury, but his impact the rest of the way was more than enough to warrant the accolades. He went on a tear in mid-January, scoring 33, 29 and 27 points over a three-game stretch when the Vandals needed it the most.
He said it himself, big players need to come up big in big moments. And that he did. In the final two minutes of regulation/overtime, Sanders shot 54 percent from the field, 50 percent from beyond the arc and 90 percent from the free charity stripe while attempting the most shots on the team.
Idaho earned the No. 3 seed in the Big Sky Tournament and a first-round bye after winning 20 games for the first time since the 1992-93 season. The Vandals will take on the winner of Eastern Washington-Northern Arizona on Thursday night at 8 p.m.
