OGDEN, Utah - Idaho's Mark Kovacs was named the Big Sky Conference men's tennis Players of the Week for matches played from March 9-15.
Kovacs, a sophomore from Budapest, Hungary, clinched a pair of Big Sky matches for the Vandals visiting Montana State and Montana. Against MSU, Idaho was up 3-2 when Kovacs grinded out a 7-6(2), 7-5 victory over Charlie Edgecombe to seal the win. After taking a 3-0 lead over Montana, the Grizzlies rallied with three straight singles wins to knot up the score at 3-3, leaving it in Kovacs' hands again. Kovacs and Tomasz Soltyka, a 2014 Big Sky second-team selection, split the first two sets at No. 5 singles before Kovacs broke away to clinch the match with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 decision.
The defending Big Sky champion Vandals improved to 10-2 overall and 5-1 in conference play this season. Kovacs is 8-1 on the season and a perfect 6-0 in Big Sky singles play. A conference honorable mention selection last season, Kovacs opened the season ranked 16th in the ITA Mountain region singles rankings.
