SAN JOSE, Calif.—Idaho women's tennis fell in a tight 4-3 battle at San Jose State on Sunday. The Vandals got three singles win on the day, but were unable to secure the clinching point.
Idaho (10-8) fell behind early, dropping the doubles point to the Spartans. SJSU took the first two courts, 6-0, 6-1. Idaho was up 4-2 on the No. 3 court, before it was abandoned.
San Jose State claimed the day's first singles point, taking a 2-0 lead. Marie Klocker handled Ana Batiri in No. 2 play, 6-1, 6-0. Gaelle Rey bested Celine Koets, 6-0, 6-3, on the No. 3 court to take a 3-0 lead.
Marianna Petrei led the Vandal comeback charge. She continued to impress in her rookie season with a 6-4, 6-2 win in No. 1 play. Belen Barcenilla cut the Spartan lead down to 3-2, winning on the No. 5 court. Sophomore Lucia Badillos evened up the match with a 6-3, 6-2 win on the No. 6 court.
The Spartans scored the deciding point on the No. 4 court. Marine Dans scored a 6-1, 6-3 win to conclude play.
Idaho closes out the season with five of its last six matches being played within the Big Sky Conference. The team returns to Moscow to take on Eastern Washington on April 1.
