PROVO, Utah—No. 59 Brigham Young shutout Idaho in its first of two weekend at the BYU Indoor Tennis Courts on Friday. Idaho now has lost two in a row and will look to get back on track on Saturday against Utah State.
"We played well as a team today," head coach Abid Akbar said. "BYU is a strong team and they proved it today."
Idaho (11-4) got off to a good start in doubles play. The pair of Mark Kovacs and Lucas Coutinho scored Idaho's only win of the day with a 6-3 win on the No. 3 court. The Cougars fought back with a win on the No. 2 court to even doubles play. BYU edged out Idaho, 7-6(4) on the No. 1 court, taking the first point of the day.
BYU (14-3) got out to a quick start in singles play. The Cougars got rolling with a 6-1, 6-2 win in No. 3 play. BYU went up 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 verdict from the No. 4 position. Keaton Cullimore clinched the match for BYU with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Felipe Fonseca.
Odon Barta forced a tiebreak in No. 1 singles, ultimately falling 6-2, 5-7, 10-4 to BYU's No. 1 Shane Monroe.
The Vandals meet former Western Athletic Conference rival, Utah State, on Saturday. The team will then play three of its last five matches at home.
