LEWISTON, Idaho – The first spring scrimmage is in the books and the numbers are impressive for the University of Idaho Vandals – particularly on offense where they netted 1,121 yards during the session at Lewiston High School that lasted just over two hours.
Sophomore quarterback Jake Luton took a majority of the snaps and completed 36 of 64 attempts for 571 yards and seven touchdowns. He used a dozen players – some receivers, some tight ends and some running backs, to reach those totals. Two seniors – Callen Hightower and Deon Watson, were the leaders. Hightower had 11 catches for 180 yards with Watson, a dual threat receiver/tight end, had 10 for 199.
There was almost as much variety out of the backfield. Returners Aaron Duckworth and Isaiah Saunders led the way but Denzal Brantley made his presence known as well with nine carries for 76 yards. Duckworth was the day's yardage leader with 103 on 14 carries, while Saunders had 18 carries for 86 yards.
With that much activity, the defense was putting up impressive numbers, too. Tony Lashley, back from injury in 2015, had 14 stops from his linebacker position, while Jayshawn Jordan, who also missed 2015 with injury, had 12. Jordan Grabski had nine and Ed Hall notched eight. Up front, Tueni Lupeamanu had seven stops, which includes three tackles for loss and two sacks.
Check out what coach Paul Petrino, Luton and Lupeamanu had to say after the scrimmage.
The Vandals' next scrimmage is next Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Kibbie Dome.
