LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The University of Idaho women's golf team is in third and five strokes off the pace of first-day leader Northern Arizona but coach Lisa Johnson believes her team has what it takes to move up the leaderboard.
Some uncharacteristic mistakes - four unplayable lies and two balls in the water, cost the Vandals dearly during the first round - but knowing her team can learn from its mistakes leaves Johnson optimistic.
Seniors Kristin Strankman and Cassie McKinley had the low rounds for the Vandals with 73 to land in a tie for sixth. Freshman Michelle Kim is tied for 14th at 74 with sophomore Kendall Gray in a tie for 22nd at 75, and freshman Sophie Hausmann tied for 31st at 77.
Strankman reached her one-over 73 with three birdies to go with two double bogeys - at the par-4 sixth and the par-4 ninth, while McKinley had four birdies with four bogeys for her one-over 73.
Kim double-bogeyed two of her last four holes - along with a birdie at the par-3 17th, to finish at two-over. Gray, too, had double-bogey woes (at the par-3 eighth) en route to her three-over round. Hausmann started double-double and was seven-over at the turn before turning in a two-under 34 to close with a 77.
The 54-hole tournament resumes Tuesday and concludes Wednesday.
