Silver dominates

MOSCOW, Idaho – The score may have been lop-sided but head coach Paul Petrino said that wasn't what mattered most in Friday night's spring finale for the University of Idaho football team.

He applauded his team's progress as it heads into a break before gearing up for the 2016 season – his fourth as the Vandals' head coach.

“We've made great improvement all the way around,” Petrino said after the No. 1 offense put up 80 points on the No. 2 defense before he called the game as the fourth quarter was beginning. “I got to see what I wanted to see. I thought it was a good time to call it a night.”

It came by run and pass – and the passing game utilized 14 receivers in accounting for 713 yards. Sophomore Jake Luton, who quarterbacked the winning silver team, completed 32 of 47 throws for 591 yards and five touchdowns. Callen Hightower (five for 167) and Jacob Sannon (five for 140) were joined as leaders among the receivers by stalwart tight end/receiver Deon Watson (six for 87).

On the ground, the trio of Aaron Duckworth (13 carries for 167 yards, Isaiah Saunders (14 for 72) and Denzal Brantley (eight for 23 plus another 16 yards on three receptions) give the Vandals a multiple threat out of the backfield.

The Silver defense allowed just one touchdown with a veteran group showing the improvement Petrino has wanted to see.

“The score wasn't as important as people executing where you want them to execute,” he said. “That happened.”
