Vandals to Take on Waves

MOSCOW, Idaho—The Idaho Vandals women's tennis team is headed to the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive season. The 2016 Big Sky champions will head to Malibu, Calif., to take on the No. 8 seeded Pepperdine Waves.

“Pepperdine is one of the best teams in the country,” head coach Mariana Cobra said following the announcement. “I expect our team go give it their best and leave everything on the court.”

Idaho (19-8) won three matches in three days to win its third conference title in as many seasons. The Vandals entered the Big Sky Tournament as the No. 3 seed and defeated No. 6 Eastern Washington, No. 2 Sacramento State and No. 1 Northern Arizona to secure the NCAA berth.

The Vandals were led by a core of young talent this spring. Freshman Marianna Petrei enters the NCAA Tournament with a 22-2 singles record. Classmate Maria Tavares is 16-7 and the year, including a 3-0 singles-record in the Big Sky Tournament.

Pepperdine (21-2) won its fourth consecutive West Coast Conference title last week, defeating Saint Mary's 4-0. The Waves are ranked eighth in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Freshman Luisa Stefani is the eight ranked singles player in the ITA. The Waves have two doubles pairing ranked in the top 25.

The Vandals last two trips to the NCAA Tournament also placed the team in California. Idaho faced Southern California in 2014 and UCLA in 2015.

The match is set for Friday, May 13. The time is still to be determined.
