When Coach Robb Akey went searching for a person to assume the role of special teams coordinator, he once again found himself searching to fill a position that he once held. When Akey found Roderick Plummer, he found a well-traveled man with a wealth of experience. The bonus is Plummer is equally well-versed in coaching backs, which is the other role he assumes at Idaho.

Since graduating from Washington State University in 1993, Plummer has spent time in various capacities ranging from coordinator to graduate assistant with six collegiate programs Cornell University, Kutzstown University, James Madison, Hampton, Wayne State and Michigan State . Additionally, he coached with the San Francisco 49ers and the Cleveland Browns of the NFL.

Plummer’s most recent position was at Cornell University where he was the special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach. After reviewing the success that Plummer enjoyed at Cornell, Akey is excited about what he can bring to the Vandals.

"I’m fired up about Rod," Akey said. "He brings passion to special teams play. He’s very thorough and has a great teaching ability to do it. He brings some great things that we can do to affect a ball game."

After traversing the country for 14 years, Plummer once again is making the transition to life on the Palouse. Akey appreciates the fact that Plummer, who is originally from Oakland, Calif., has made the transition from life in the city to life as a college athlete in a small town.

"He has walked in the shoes of a lot of the guys that come up here," Akey said. "He knows what it’s like to go from the city environment to living on the Palouse."
