SPOKANE, Wash. - It was a fantastic Friday for the University of Idaho women's tennis team as the Vandals knocked off Eastern Washington and Gonzaga.
It was a busy day as the team traveled to Cheney in the morning for a match against the Eagles before completing the doubleheader with an evening meeting against Gonzaga in Spokane.
Coming off a win against LCSC on Wednesday, Idaho handled everything Eastern Washington threw at them to squeak out a 4-3 win.
"This was a good win early in the season," women's tennis head coach Tyler Neill said. "Although we didn't play our best, our team fought hard and it was the difference in the match."
Barbara Maciocha played a key role in victory beating Judy Leining in singles play 6-4, 6-1 and teamed up with Silvia Irimescu to notch a doubles victory.
"Basia played very consistent and was able to wear her opponent down and her match clinched the win," Neill said. "Yvette and Daniela were down 7-4 in doubles, but they fought back to win their match and that ended up being the difference in the overall team match."
The Vandals had no such trouble with Gonzaga, dismissing the Bulldogs 6-1 in the evening match.
"I was very impressed with our team's performance in this match," Neill said. "It's always difficult playing the second match in a double header and Gonzaga is always a tough team, but we rose to the challenge."
Barbara Maciocha continued her fine form this week picking up wins in singles and doubles play.
"Basia and Silvia had a come-from-behind win in doubles to clinch the doubles point," Neill said. "That set the tone for the rest of the match and we came out with a lot of energy early in singles."
Alexandra Ulesanu had a solid outing against Gonzaga picking up a victory against Prue Teitzel.
"Alex also had a nice win," Neill said. "Her opponent was undefeated with a 5-0 record on the season."
Senior Daniela Cohen earned a hard fought three-set victory over Danielle Farmer 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
"Daniela had very nice win, bouncing back from a tough loss in the morning," Neill said. "She battled for almost three hours in a match with many ups and downs, and she came up big at the end to win it."
The victories improve Idaho's record to 3-1this season. The Vandals are back in action on Tuesday with match against LCSC in Lewiston.
