WAC honors three Vandals with weekly awards

DENVER - The Western Athletic Conference honored three University of Idaho track and field athletes on Monday as Verizon Wireless Track and Field Athletes of the Week for their performances during the week of May 3-9.

Senior K.C. Dahlgren grabbed the Women's Field Athlete of the Week award, while senior Sam Michener and sophomore Jeremy Klas were Men's Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively.

Dahlgren (Missoula, Mont./Big Sky HS) cleared a season- and WAC-best height of 13-0.25 (3.97m) to win the women's pole vault at the Vandal Jamboree. That height is the best in the conference by a four-inch margin and makes Dahlgren the only conference athlete to clear 13 feet in the event this year.

Michener (Gresham, Ore./Barlow HS) was a double winner at the Vandal Jamboree on Saturday, as he took titles in the 100m and 200m with personal bests in both events. He started it off with a 10.67 in the 100m, followed by a 21.53 in the 200m. His 200m time ranks fifth in the WAC this year, while his 100m time is seventh.

Klas (Moscow, Idaho/Moscow HS) overcame windy conditions to clear 16-8.25 (5.09m) and win the men's pole vault on Saturday. He is the only WAC athlete to clear 5 meters in the vault this season, and he's done so in all six of his competitions this year.

The honors are the first for Dahlgren and Michener, and the third for Klas this year. They give Idaho 17 total athlete of the week honors for the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons. Idaho has had at least one honoree in seven consecutive weekends.
