Soccer flat in road loss

LARAMIE, Wyo. - Idaho head soccer coach Pete Showler hoped Idaho would come into Sunday's match against Wyoming with a head of steam after winning on Friday at Northern Colorado, but the Vandals were flat and paid for it on the scoreboard.

Idaho (1-2) gave up a pair of goals - both knocked in by Vandal defenders - in a 2-0 loss to Wyoming (2-2) that Showler described as uncharacteristically sloppy.

"We just didn't show up. I can't explain it," Showler said. "There was just nothing there today and it was disappointing to watch, because this team has shown so much more."

After playing to a scoreless first half in which the Vandals were outshot 7-3, Idaho gave Wyoming the upper hand right out of the gates in the second period when a UI player deflected a Wyoming cross directly into the net at the 48:17 mark. The Cowgirls went up 2-0 at the 80:11 mark under the same circumstances.

"We put both balls in the back of our own net," Showler said.

Wyoming outshot Idaho 16-5 overall and 10-1 in shots on goal. The Cowgirls also had four corners to one for Idaho.

Showler pointed out a couple strong individual efforts, like junior goalkeeper Liz Boyden's eight saves in 90 minutes, but said that the team as a whole didn't perform as well as they could have.

Idaho will try to regroup and refocus for next weekend's Governor's Cup Tournament at Pocatello, Idaho. The Vandals defend their Cup crown against Idaho State on Friday and Utah Valley on Sunday. Idaho went 2-0 at the Governor's Cup last season to take the title outright for the first time in school history.
