Shin wins Portland City Open

MOSCOW, Idaho - Even though the Idaho men's tennis team didn't have a collegiate tournament to compete in, many of the players took it upon themselves to travel and play in open tournaments in the region last weekend.

Idaho's Alan Shin competed in and won the singles draw at the Portland City Championships, and advanced to the doubles finals with fellow Vandal Andrew Dobbs, before defaulting the finals in order to return to Moscow for class on Monday. The tournament was open to any member of the United States Tennis Association, and included several strong current and former college tennis players.

Abid Akbar, Jose Bendeck, Jake Knox and Kevin Lee traveled to the EWU USTA Campus Showdown, where Akbar advanced to the singles finals. That event was coordinated by the USTA, and allowed junior players, current and former college players and men's open players to compete against each other.

"It is great to see that some of our guys are going out and finding and taking part in additional competition on their own," Idaho coach Jeff Beaman said. "It is also great to see that in addition to the extra experience they are achieving strong results."

The Vandals will wrap up their fall schedule at the PNW Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of Washington, Nov. 5-7.
