Velvere, Leonard honored

DENVER - The Western Athletic Conference honored Idaho sophomores Liga Velvere and Kristine Leonard as its women's Track and Field Athletes of the Week for the week of Feb. 14-20.

Velvere, a first-year Vandal from Saldus, Latvia, broke Idaho's school record in the 400m last weekend with a time of 55.46. The time was good to win the event at the WSU Open II and give her the fastest 400m time in the conference so far this season. She also has the conference's best 800m time of the year.

Leonard, also a first-year Vandal who hails from Rathdrum, Idaho, posted career bests in both the shot put and the weight throw at the WSU Open II. Her toss of 45-3.5 (13.80m) won the shot put after her 48-5.25 (14.76m) performance in the weight throw on Friday.

The honors are the first for both Idaho women in their careers, and the first weekly women's honors for the Vandals this indoor season. Junior Jeremy Klas earned the men's field award earlier this year.
