|Men's tennis tops Hawai`i|
MOSCOW, Idaho -The Idaho men's tennis team played its third Western Athletic Conference match in as many days as it closed out the weekend with a 4-2 win over No. 56 Hawai'i on Sunday.
"This is a huge match for the program and a great performance from the guys on the team," Idaho coach Jeff Beaman said. "This really puts us in a great position for seeding going into the conference tournament."
The 54th-ranked Vandals got wins at No. 2, 3, 5 and 6 singles to clinch the match without having to play a decisive doubles point.
Idaho improves to 16-4 on the season and 3-1 in WAC play with the win. The Vandals also beat Utah State over the weekend, and lost to Fresno State.
Lachlan Reed got a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 and Alex Joitoiu won 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 for Idaho. Jose Bendeck sealed the match victory for the Vandals with his 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 5 singles after Alan Shin won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6.
"This year we are continuing to come together, we're continuing to compete better at every spot," Beaman said. "In the past we've had guys who are hot at some spots, and guys who are cold. It's not every guy every day, but the last three matches, every guy has had a good match."
The Vandals return to action on April 14 when they host Gonzaga in Moscow at 3 p.m. Idaho will then travel to California to face Saint Mary's on April 16 and Santa Clara on April 17, in a pair of matches that were originally slated for mid-February. The Vandals have just two WAC matches left on the schedule, as they face New Mexico State (April 21) and Nevada (April 23) in Las Cruces, N.M., before the WAC tournament April 29-May 1 in Boise, Idaho.
