BOISE, Idaho -- The No. 51 Idaho men's tennis team advanced
to the Western Athletic Conference semifinals with a 4-0 win against Utah State
Friday. The third-seeded Vandals will face second-seeded New Mexico State on
Saturday at noon pacific with a berth in the WAC finals on the line.
“The guys really came out strong in doubles today and
carried the momentum into singles,” Idaho coach Jeff Beaman said. “We're really
looking forward to a rematch against New Mexico State tomorrow.”
Idaho fell to New Mexico State 5-0 in Las Cruces, N.M., on
April 21.
The Vandals won the doubles point Friday with wins at the
No. 2 and No. 3 positions from Alex Joitoiu and Lachlan Reed (8-2 at No. 2) and
Abid Akbar and Andrew Dobbs (8-5 at No. 3). The No. 1 doubles match was
unfinished as Marius Cirstea and Jose Bendeck were tied 6-6 when Idaho clinched
the doubles point.
Idaho sealed the match victory with wins at the top three
singles spots, as Cirstea won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1, Reed won 6-3, 7-5 at No. 2 and
Joitoiu won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3. Reed's win gives him 31 for the season, tying
Idaho's single season wins record which dates back to the 1976-77 season.
Idaho improves to 19-8 on the season with the win, and has
more wins and a better winning percentage than any other WAC team.
