MOSCOW, Idaho – Coach Robb Akey wanted to see big plays. He wanted to see intensity. He wanted to see improvement.

He had it all Saturday as the University of Idaho Vandals went through the second of their three spring scrimmages.

“We competed well,” Akey said after the 90-minute session at the Kibbie Dome. “It was a pretty physical go today. That was a good thing.

“Both sides did some good things.”

The defense controlled the bulk of the early scrimmage with highlight reel efforts from Bradley Njoku, who returned an interception 37 yards to score, and Su`a Tuala, who showed speed in thwarting a touchdown when he tracked down Ken McRoyal from across the field. Tuala also added three tackles for loss to lead the effort, while Quinton Bradley and Maxx Forde were responsible for two sacks each.

The offense had its highlights, too, with more than a handful coming from junior college transfer receiver Najee Lovett, who hauled in four passes for 72 yards.  The quarterbacks were a collective 25 of 39 for 226 yards with Taylor Davis (13 of 23 for 132 yards) and Dominique Blackman (11 of 16 for 83 yards) taking the bulk of the snaps.

“I saw some pretty good decisions being made,” Akey said. “I’m anxious to see the film and be a little more defined about what was out there.”

The Vandals conclude spring football with the Silver and Gold Scrimmage Friday at 6 p.m. at the Kibbie Dome. There is post-scrimmage gathering at the University Inn-Best Western immediately following the scrimmage.

The Vandals open the 2012 season Aug. 30 vs. Eastern Washington at the Kibbie Dome. Season tickets are on sale at www.GoVandals.com or by calling 208-885-6466.
