Track & Field

New track makes debut

This Week in Vandal Track & Field
Vandal Jamboree (May 4-5) Moscow, Idaho
Oregon Twilight (May 5) Eugene, Ore.

Looking Forward
Idaho will host its inaugural meet at the newly-renovated Dan O'Brien Track & Field Complex on Friday and Saturday with the Vandal Jamboree. Idaho will welcome competitors from Eastern Washington, Lewis-Clark State, Washington State and Whitworth at the meet. Former Vandals Sam Michener, Christie Gordon and two-time Olympian Angela Whyte are also scheduled to compete. A small group of Idaho track athletes will also travel to Eugene, Ore., for Saturday's Oregon Twilight.

Historically Speaking
The Vandal Jamboree was on a one-year hiatus last season during track complex construction, but the last time Idaho hosted the event in 2010, the team claimed 19 individual titles and made a pair of record book entries. two current Vandal women, sophomore Kelly Jacka (200m), senior Gabby Midles (hammer throw), will return to defend titles from that meet. At last year's Oregon Twilight, sophomores Hannah Kiser and Alycia Butterworth posted career-best times in the 1500m (4:26.30) and 3000m steeplechase (10:37.27), respectively, and both will try to do it again this year. Juniors Barry Britt and Anna Kalbrener each also posted career bests in the 1500m last year at the meet.

A Quick Recap
Last week at the Duane Hartman Invitational, Idaho won nine total individual titles and made five all-time top-10 entries. Junior Kristine Leonard was the leader with a pair of career-best and top-10 marks in the women's shot put (47-9¾) and discus throw (161-11), while junior Ellen Rouse set a new best in the women's javelin at 147-0. Sophomore Ugis Svazs moved into third all-time at Idaho with a 227-5 in the men's javelin, while senior Mike Marshall moved to fifth with a career-best toss of 217-10. At the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational, senior Stéphane Colle ran a career-best 3:47.86 in the 1500m to move into ninth all-time at Idaho in the event.
