CORVALLIS, Ore. – The University of Idaho women's golf team
slipped to sixth during the final round of the Oregon State Invitational but
that doesn't mean coach Lisa Johnson hasn't seen marked improvement from her
team from its first tournament to its second.
“We improved by 11 shots over last week on a course that was
similarly difficult,” said Johnson, whose team has just one upper classman on
the roster. “That was encouraging.
“We didn't count any scores in the 80s this week or last. That's
a testament to how well the freshmen are playing.”
Tuesday's final round306 pushed the Vandals to a team-total
902 – just four back of fifth-place San Francisco and only five back of host
Oregon State. Washington won the tournament with an 853 with Washington State
second at 878 and Gonzaga third at 891.
Kaitlyn Oster had the low tournament for the Vandals with a
223 after rounds of 75-74-74 to finish in a tie for 17th. After
playing her first five holes of the tournament five-over, she played the
remaining 49 in just two-over.
“Kaitlyn had a great tournament,” Johnson said.
Also for the Vandals, Leilanie Kim tied for 21st
with a 225 with Rachel Choi in a tie for 29th at 228. Kristen
Strankman tied for 41st at 231 and Cassie McKinley tied for 48th
at 232.
Johnson said an emphasis on putting and their short games
will be the focus as they had into next week's WSU Inland Cup at Palouse Ridge.
