SAN MARCOS, Texas – Idaho women’s soccer owned the first 80 minutes of their Western Athletic Conference opener at Texas State – then saw it all wiped away with two miscues in the final 10 minutes in a 2-1 loss on Friday.

Idaho took a 1-0 lead in the first half on senior Chelsea Small’s score from sophomore Katie Baran at 27:39. Small took the pass from Baran and placed a shot into the top corner from 18 yards out to give Idaho the early lead.

With time winding down in the match, Texas State scored on a break at 80:51, and then got the game winner three minutes later when another defensive miscue gave Bobcat forward Lynsey Curry a free attempt that she put away with seven minutes to play.

“We only have ourselves to blame today,” Idaho head coach Peter Showler said after the game. “We just gave away two sloppy goals. When you probably should be four- or five-nil up and you don’t finish your chances, then you give up two half-chances, that’s what happens.”

Idaho outshot the Bobcats by a 25-7 margin overall and held an 11-5 edge in corner kicks. The Vandals held the majority of possession, but once again for Idaho, the story of the game was missed opportunities. The team put several shots high and outside the frame and didn’t finish its many good chances.

“When we have that amount of possession in a game, we have to finish teams off, and we’re guilty of not doing that,” Showler said.

The loss dips the Vandals to 3-10-0 overall and 0-1-0 in WAC play this year, while Texas State moves to 4-7-1 and 1-0-0 in the conference. Idaho faces UTSA next on Sunday at 11 a.m. (PT). The Roadrunners opened WAC play on Friday afternoon with a 1-1 draw at home against Seattle U.
