|Vandals headed to Texas|
The Vandals are 1-5 and 1-0 in the Western Athletic Conference after winning their league-opener over New Mexico State last Saturday. Texas State is 2-3 and is playing its first WAC game against the Vandals.
Robb Akey is in his sixth season as head coach at Idaho. After rebuilding in his first two seasons, his 2009 team won the Humanitarian Bowl and his 2010 team was on the verge of repeating as a bowl team. He is a graduate of Weber State University and coached for his alma mater (1988-94) as well as Northern Arizona University (1995-98) and Washington State University (1999-2006) before taking over at Idaho in his first head coaching job.
Dennis Franchione is in his fourth season as head coach at Texas State but only second successive after coaching the Bobcats in 1990-91. He is 21-18 at Texas State but 195-110-2 as a head coach. His coaching career began at Miller (Mo.) High School (1973-74). He had two other high school stints (Mulvane and Peabody-Burns) before moving into the collegiate ranks as an assistant at Kansas State (1978-80). From there he went to Tennessee Tech (1981-82) then on to his first head coaching job at Pittsburg State (Kan.) from 1985-89. Next was his first top at Texas State (then Southwest Texas) before head coaching jobs at New Mexico (1992-97), TCU (1998-2000), Alabama (2001-02) and Texas A&M (2003-07).
This is the fifth game against Texas State, which previously was known as Southwest Texas State. They last played in 1996 when the Bobcats notched their only victory in the series when they won, 27-21, at home. Idaho won the other three meetings – 1990, 38-31 at San Marcos; 1991, 41-38 at the Kibbie Dome, and 1993, 66-38 at the Kibbie Dome. Current Texas State head coach Dennis Franchione was head coach for the 1990 and 1991 games.
The game is on the Vandal Sports Network, which is carried regionally on stations in Idaho and Washington, as well as Altitude Sports. Bob Akamian is calling the play-by-play with Larry Polowski providing the analysis.
Tom Morris (play by play) and Evan Ellis (analysis) again are calling the gameday action with KZFN (FM 106.1) as the flagship of the statewide, 14-station network.
Idaho’s captains for the 2012 season are receiver Mike Scott (senior; Palo Alto, Calif.), cornerback Aaron Grymes (senior; Seattle, Wash), and punter Bobby Cowan (senior; Vancouver, Wash.).
ONTO THE FIELD
The Vandals have added a third element to their entrance onto the playing field. Traditionally, they have carried an American Flag and a battle ax commemorating the tradition of the Vandal. This year, they’ve added a flag that honors the memory of former Idaho receiver Ken McRoyal, who died last summer.
