A Look at the Aggies

UC Davis is 1-3 this season after road losses at Oklahoma State and Nevada and a narrow home loss to Northern Arizona. The Aggies beat Sacramento State, 87-76, on Nov. 20. UCD has scored at least 80 points in three straight games and is shooting 48.9 percent overall and 42.5 percent from 3-point range as a team. The Aggies’ losses at Nevada and NAU came by a combined four points. UCD holds a +7.7 rebounding margin and is outshooting opponents, but also turns the ball over an average of 17.0 times per game. The Aggies average 9.3 made 3-pointers per game so far this year, but they also surrender 8.5 per game to their opponents.

UC Davis Head Coach Jim Les

Jim Les is 160-169 in his 11th year as a collegiate head coach. He is in his second season at UC Davis, where he has a 6-29 overall record. His head coaching experience includes a nine-year tenure at Bradley, where he went 152-140 and led the Braves to a 2006 Sweet 16 berth and a 2007 NIT bid. Under Les, Bradley also earned runner-up finishes at the inaugural College Basketball Invitational (2008) and Postseason Tournament (2009).

Idaho Vandals

Idaho started slowly at Washington State, but eliminated a double-digit second-half deficit before eventually falling late. The Vandals clawed back within two from a 13-point deficit to pull within two, but couldn’t get stops on WSU’s final four possessions to complete the road rally. The Vandal men are 1-3 this season and each of the team’s last two losses has been characterized by a second-half lull. Head coach Don Verlin said the team needs to focus on the small details to take the next step forward.

Vandals vs. Aggies

Despite the relative regional proximity, Idaho and UC Davis have only played twice. The Vandals have won both games by 20 points, including last year’s 94-74 road triumph at Davis, Calif. The only other meeting in history was a 77-57 Idaho win on Dec. 20, 1985. In last year’s meeting, Connor Hill scored a then-career-high 17 points on 5-of-7 long-range shooting, while Stephen Madison had 19 and Kyle Barone had 15 and the Vandal men shot .561 from the floor and .600 from 3-point range.

Shooters Gonna Shoot

Sophomore guard Connor Hill set a freshman record last season with 47 made 3-pointers. He’s show no hesitation this season and ranks second in the WAC with 2.8 made 3-pointers per game. Last time Idaho played UC Davis, Hill came off the bench and drained five of his seven 3-point attempts.

Start The Countdown...

With 996 career points, junior Kyle Barone will try to become the 13th member of Idaho’s 1,000-Point Club this year. The most recent Vandal to break the 1,000-point barrier was Tanoris Shepard, who scored 1,137 from 2002-06. The last Vandal frontcourt player to crack quadruple digits was Deon Watson (1,115) in 1994.
