Vandals sweep weight throw

PULLMAN, Wash. – University of Idaho track and field kicked off the season with a pair of individual victories and a pair of career-best marks on Friday in the weight throw at the WSU Open, hosted by Washington State.

Junior Kyle Rothwell claimed the win in the men's 35-pound weight throw with a heave of 54-3.75 (16.55m), while senior Kristine Leonard took the women's 20-pound weight win with a throw of 54-8.75 (16.68m) to kick things off for the Vandals.

A pair of sophomores tallied career bests on Friday, as Zach Trumbauer finished second behind Rothwell on the men's side with a mark of 52-0 (15.85m) and Molly Meyers finished third on the women's side at 44-3.25 (13.49m).

Also for Idaho, senior Joseph Charles hit 51-6.25 (15.70m) for third and senior Donavon Cunningham went 51-5.5 (15.68m) to give Idaho the sweep of the top four places in the event. Senior Ellen Rouse threw 43-4.5 (13.22m) to take fourth, while redshirt freshman Alaena Wilfong was sixth at 40-1.5 (12.23m) in her first career action.

The Friday portion of the meet was just the men's and women's weight throw. The remainder of the meet resumes on Saturday, starting with the women's long jump at 8:30 a.m. (PT). Track events begin at 10 a.m. with the women's 60m hurdles preliminary.
