PULLMAN, Wash. – University of Idaho sophomore swimmer Rachel Millet continued her undefeated streak in individual races – but it wasn’t enough for the Vandals, who couldn’t keep pace with Pac-12 Washington State in the annual Border Battle Swim Meet at Gibb Pool.

Millet won the 100 and 200 freestyle races and the 200 IM in the 156-106 loss to close out Idaho’s regular season.

While the Vandals won five of the 12 individual events, the Cougars won both relays. That, coupled with  Idaho’s inability – in a couple events, to miss out on the placing points that come with placing second through fifth that was most costly.

“It was hard to lose that first relay,” coach Mark Sowa said, “but we didn’t give up. We kept competing.”

Idaho’s other individual victories went to senior Kelsie Saxe, who won the 100 breaststroke, and freshman Jamie Sterbis, who won the 200 butterfly. In the 200 fly, the Vandals picked up the depth points Sowa was seeking with the runner-up effort of Meaghan McCloskey and the fourth-place finish of Kori Ungaretti. The same was true of the 200 back where Erica Anderson was second and followed in third by Sammi Mischkot and fourth by Janelle Stacy.

“We learned a lot today,” Sowa said. “We did well in spots; in other spots we didn’t.

“What I do enjoy is we never stopped competing.”
