SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Three events, two school records and the University of Idaho Vandals are in third after the first day of the Western Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships.

It may be early in the four-day meet but coach Mark Sowa is seeing marks he hasn't seen before from his young team.

“We had a great day,” Sowa said after the Vandals tallied 91 points to Northern Arizona's meet-leading 118 and 101 for current runner-up San Jose State.

It started with the 200 medley relay, which trimmed 1.08 seconds off the 2011 record. Janelle Stacy, Kelsie Saxe, Rachel Millet and Erica Anderson combined for a 1:41.47 to finish fourth. SJSU won the race in 1:40.08.

“It was just a fantastic swim,” Sowa said.

Next up were the 1-meter divers, where Paige Hunt was just shy of her school record in finishing second. Her 284.10 was just off the winning dives of Kris Ardavanis of NAU, who had a 291.10. Mairin Jameson had her best finish at the championship meet with a sixth with a 257.20, while Kelsi Potterf took 14^th with a 227.30.

“Our divers were phenomenal today,” Sowa said. “I expect great things as the meet goes on.”

The 800 free relay was the final event of the opening day and again, the Vandals were in school record form with their 7:25.52 turned in by Megan Venlos, Lyndsay Williams, Kirah Monks and Millet.
