This Week in Vandal Track and Field Stanford Invitational - Mar.29-30 (Palo Alto, Calif.)
Looking Forward Idaho opened its 2013 outdoor season at the Whitworth Buc Scoring Invite, competing with a petite group of athletes that consisted mainly of field performers. Idaho won’t be at full capacity quite yet when it competes at the Stanford Invitational this weekend. Seniors Barry Britt, Ugis Svazs, Mike Marshall, and Jeremy Klas along with sophomore Matt Sullivan will make up the Idaho travel squad that will compete at Palo Alto, Calif.
Historically Speaking The last time the Idaho Track and Field team competed at the Stanford Invitational, a pair of top-10 marks were won on the track. Senior Liga Velvere won the women’s 400m hurdles while junior Hannah Kiser took the top place in her section of the 1500m.
A Quick Recap Idaho opened its 2013 outdoor season with a partial group at the Whitworth Buc Scoring Invite last weekend. Both Vandal squads ended the outdoor debut in third place and overall Idaho claimed five individual event wins. Senior Kristine Leonard made Idaho all-time top-10 history at the meet last weekend. Her mark of 169-11 (51.79) in the hammer throw moves her into sixth all-time in the event.
NCAA Outdoor Qualification NCAA outdoor track and field is in the fourth season of the two-region national qualification system. The top 48 athletes in each event qualify for the NCAA Preliminary Rounds, which are split between the East and West Regions. The Preliminary Round sites host the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships qualifying rounds of the field events and the opening rounds through semifinals of track events (depending on the event distance). In the first year of the system in 2010, Idaho had eight women and five men qualify for the NCAA West Preliminary Round. Last season, six women and seven men qualified. This year’s NCAA West Preliminary will be hosted by the University of Texas at Austin, Texas.
