T&F hosts Vandal Jamboree

This week in Vandal Track & Field
Vandal Jamboree (May 3-4) Moscow, Idaho
Oregon Twilight (May 3) Eugene, Ore.

Looking Forward
University of Idaho track and field will host the Vandal Jamboree at the Dan O'Brian Track & Field Complex on Friday and Saturday. Idaho will also send a partial group of competitors to Eugene, Ore., for Oregon Twilight on Friday.

A Quick Recap
Idaho re-wrote the record books for a third time this season when senior Ugis Svazs fired off a career-best toss of 240-7 (73.34m) in the men's javelin throw, breaking the previous record set in 1996 by Oscar Duncan. The Vandals posted 11 individual wins at the meet and hit multiple personal-best marks. The vandal women accounted for eight of the victories while the men added three. Victories on the women's side included, Kristine Leonard (hammer throw), Karlene Hurrel (100m), Keli Hall (800m), Maggie Miller (3000m), Liga Velvere (400m), Alyssa Covington (long jump), Johanna Hockestaller (shot put) and Sarah Nutsch (hammer throw). On the men's side, Ben Ayesu-Attah (400m) and Jeremy Klas (pole vault) added wins.

Historically Speaking
At the unveiling of the brand new facility last year, the Vandals claimed eight victories and posted six all-time top-10 entries. Returning winners from last year include Kyle Rothwell, Mike Marshall, Jason Lorentz, Ailene MacPherson, Dylan Watts and the women's 4x100m quartet of Mercedes Blackwood, Allee Cooper and Kelly Jacka. At the Oregon Twilight the Vandals sent a group of distance runners that was highlighted by Alicia Butterworth's career-best performance in the 3000m steeplechase.

NCAA Outdoor Qualification
NCAA outdoor track and field is in the fourth season of the two-region national qualification system. The top 48 athletes in each event qualify for the NCAA Preliminary Rounds, which are split between the East and West Regions. The Preliminary Round sites host the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships qualifying rounds of the field events and the opening rounds through semifinals of track events (depending on the event distance). In the first year of the system in 2010, Idaho had eight women and five men qualify for the NCAA West Preliminary Round. Last season, six women and seven men qualified. This year's NCAA West Preliminary will be hosted by the University of Texas at Austin.

Third Record Falls
Senior Ugis Svazs became the third Vandal to re-write the history books when he broke the Idaho school record in the men's javelin throw at the Duane Hartman meet. His career-best toss of 240-7(73.34m) broke the previous record of 238-6 set in 1996 by Oscar Duncan.
