LARAMIE, Wyo. – The Idaho volleyball team grinded out wins over Wyoming in the first two sets, but lost all momentum midway through the third en route to a 3-2 loss on Friday night.

Idaho (1-1) won 25-23 and 28-26 in the first two sets to gain the early advantage. The Vandals jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the third set when Wyoming (2-0) made its run. The Cowgirls went on an 11-2 run of their own to tie the set at 13-13. Wyoming extended the match by winning the set 25-21 and rolled to a 25-16 win in the fourth set to force a decisive fifth set.

“We played great in the first two games, we competed,” Idaho coach Debbie Buchanan said. “Everything that we could have asked the girls to do they did. We just started to relax and get comfortable and they were able to make some things happen and we were never able to stop their momentum.”

The Vandals fell behind 12-6 in the fifth set before going on a 6-2 run, but Wyoming ended Idaho’s hopes for its own comeback with a kill from Erin Kirby to win 15-12 and take the match 3-2.

“If our kids can battle like they did in sets one and two we’re going to have a solid year,” Buchanan said. “We just have to make sure we don’t lose faith in what we’re doing when things aren’t going our way.”

Junior middle blocker Alyssa Schultz led Idaho with 17 kills on 30 swings, hitting .500 in the match, and added 10 blocks for her first double-double of the season. Sophomore setter Meredith Coba had 45 assists, 14 digs and five blocks for her own double-double.

Jessica Hastriter finished with 16 kills, hit .394 and added six digs, and Katelyn Peterson added 12 kills, four digs and three blocks for Idaho. Taylor Wilkinson had seven kills without an error and added five blocks while hitting .412. Sophomore libero Jenna Ellis had 12 digs and seven assists, and freshman defensive specialist Terra Varney added 12 digs and a pair of assists.

Idaho hit .233 in the match with 65 kills and 25 errors on 172 attempts. Idaho out-blocked Wyoming 15.0-12.0 but the Cowgirls owned a 74-60 advantage in digs.

The Vandals wrap up the UniWyo Wyoming Invite on Saturday with matches against Drake at 10 a.m. (PT) and Stetson at 4 p.m. (PT).
