|Border battle Saturday!|
The Vandals are 0-3 after a hard-fought home opening loss to Northern Illinois. Washington State is 2-1 after winning at USC and at home against Southern Utah after opening with a loss at Auburn.
Paul Petrino is in his first season at Idaho and his first as a head coach. While it is his first head coaching job, it is not Petrino’s first stint at Idaho. His coaching career began at Carroll College (his alma mater, 1989). From Carroll, he went to Idaho where he coached running back, receivers and special teams from 1992-94. From Idaho it was on to Utah State (1995-97), Louisville (1998-99), Southern Mississippi (2000-02), Louisville (2003-06), Atlanta Falcons (2007), Arkansas (2008-09), Illinois (2010-11) and Arkansas (2012).
Mike Leach is in his second season at Washington State after a successful tenure at Texas Tech (2000-09). He earned his bachelor’s degree at Brigham Young and is one of just six coaches who was not a college football player. He later earned his law degree from Pepperdine. He started his coaching career at Cal Poly (1987) and also coached at the College of the Desert (1988), Pori Bears (1989), Iowa Wesleyan (1989-91), Valdosta State (1992-96), Kentucky (1997-98) and Oklahoma (1999).
Idaho is playing the 2013 season as an FBS independent before rejoining the Sun Belt Conference in 2014. The Vandals have been independent previously – 1893-1907 and 1959-62. There are six other independent FBS programs – Army, BYU, Navy, New Mexico State, Notre Dame and Old Dominion.
Washington State has a 70-17-3 lead in this historic series that dates to 1894 and, for decades, was played annually with the losing team’s student body walking to the campus of the winning team. The game was played most recently in 2007 with WSU winning 45-28. Idaho’s most recent wins were back to back in 1999 (28-17) and 2000 (38-34).
Saturday’s game is on the Pac-12 Network.
