|Volleyball set for home opener|
MOSCOW -- The Idaho volleyball team will play at home for the first time this season when it hosts three Western Athletic Conference matches in a five day span, as Utah Valley (Sept. 26), Bakersfield (Sept. 28) and Grand Canyon (Sept. 30) visit Memorial Gym. All three matches begin at 7 p.m.
The Vandals (7-5) have never faced Utah Valley or Grand Canyon, and have only squared off with Bakersfield once before, a 2-0 loss back in 1979.
Utah Valley is 6-8 in 2013 heading into the week, and the Wolverines have won four consecutive matches, beating Weber State, UC Riverside, Wyoming and Air Force in that span.
Bakersfield is 7-6 entering the week and will face Seattle U on Sept. 26 before visiting Idaho. Four of the Roadrunners’ wins in 2013 have come by a 3-0 sweep. Idaho and Bakersfield are the WAC’s top hitting teams, as the Vandals lead the league with a .253 hitting percentage and rank second with 13.0 kills per set, while Bakersfield ranks second with a .213 hitting percentage and leads with 14.3 kills per set.
Grand Canyon is 6-5 on the season but is coming off four straight wins and has a 6-1 record in its last seven matches. The Antelopes’ last loss was Sept. 13 in a five-setter against Central Connecticut State.
The Vandals have won four of their last five matches and are coming off a 3-0 sweep of Nevada in their non-conference finale. Idaho junior Alyssa Schultz, the Preseason WAC Player of the Year, leads the league with a .405 hitting percentage entering conference play, while sophomore setter Meredith Coba tops the WAC with 10.45 assists per game. The Vandals have finished .500 or better in conference play in 10 consecutive seasons and have an 80-48 (.625) all-time record in the WAC including 23-9 (.719) the last two seasons.
