|Tennis teams open strong|
The Idaho men’s and women’s tennis teams are off to a strong start in their weekend tournaments, as four men are still alive in their singles flights at the Eastern Washington Classic and five Vandal women are alive in main-draw singles at the Cougar Classic.
Cristobal Ramos Salazar and Jose Bendeck each reached Saturday’s Flight 1 semifinals at the EWU Classic with a pair of wins on Friday. Bendeck will face Gonzaga’s Vladimir Mijactovic and Ramos Salazar will square off with Nick Kamisar, also of Gonzaga. After an opening-round bye, the two will also team up in doubles play in the quarterfinal round as the draw’s top seed.
Andrew Zedde won two straight-set matches in Flight 2 to reach the semifinal round where he will take on Portland’s Kent Andreasan. Filip Fichtel won his first two matches in Flight 3 and will face EWU’s Luke Ness in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Fichtel and Sam Laudon won their opening-round doubles match in the White Flight and will face a Montana State duo Saturday.
On the women’s side, Galina Bykova and Victoria Lozano each reached the quarterfinals with two top-flight singles wins. In the second flight, Rita Bermudez, Belen Barcenilla and Sophie Vickers each won two matches Friday to reach Saturday’s quarterfinal round.
Bykova and Lozano paired up for a 6-3 doubles win and advanced to the quarterfinals of the top flight. In second-flight doubles Barcenilla and Vickers paired up for a 7-6 win while Bety Flores paired up with a Utah State player and won 6-4 in the opening round.
