|Vandals win main doubles draw|
PULLMAN, Wash. – Victoria Lozano and Almudena Sanz teamed up to go 5-0 in the top doubles flight at the Washington State Invitational to lead the Idaho women’s tennis team over the weekend.
The Vandal duo beat pairings from Washington State, Eastern Washington and Seattle U to finish the tournament with the best doubles record of any team in the draw.
“Vicky and Almu did really well playing against tough teams and staying aggressive from the first point to the last point, so I’m really pleased with this whole tournament,” Idaho coach Myriam Sopel said.
In the second doubles flight, Belen Barcenilla and Rita Bermudez went 4-1 in doubles and finished second.
“I’m really pleased, especially with doubles,” Sopel said. “We work on some specific things that are individualized to each girl and each doubles combinations and they did a great job of applying what they’ve worked on in practice.”
In the top singles flight, Lozano beat Sanz 6-5, 6-3 in the third-place match after both players fell in the semifinals. Freshman Galina Bykova reached the second-flight championship match before falling 6-5, 6-2 for a second-place finish, while Bermudez took third in the draw. Barcenilla reach the third-flight semifinals and eventually won the third-place match in that draw.
The Vandals head to the ITA Regional Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., this week, the marquee event of the fall schedule.
“I know there is going to be tough competition against some teams we have already played this season, so we know what to expect,” Sopel said of the Regional Championships. “We know the level is going to be high and every match is going to be tough, but we’re ready for it. We’ve been working hard and proving ourselves in tournaments and having good results.”
