SEATTLE -- The Idaho volleyball team couldn’t overcome a slow start against Seattle U on Friday night, falling 3-1.

Idaho was in a 2-0 hole after 25-12 and 25-21 losses in the first two sets, but came out energized in the third set and extended the match with a 25-18 win. The Vandals led 18-12 in the fourth set but Seattle U closed out the set and match on a 13-2 run for a 25-20 match-clinching win.

“We played jittery then we started to get into a rhythm in game three,” Idaho coach Debbie Buchanan said after the match. “We told them we had nothing to lose so just go after it. We had that lead in game four and it’s just going back to making some of those little errors that we have to nip, we can’t keep letting those things happen. Unfortunately that’s some of the youth we see at times.”

Sophomore Katelyn Peterson and redshirt-freshman Ali Forde led the offensive attack for the Vandals. Peterson finished with 12 kills on a .393 hitting percentage while Forde had 12 kills of her own and hit .303, both career highs. Sophomore setter Meredith Coba had a double-double with 35 assists and 10 digs in the match.

“We need to get more than two people hitting high numbers,” Buchanan said. “Right now teams are just releasing on us. As that match went on and we weren’t passing well they were just releasing out and it makes it easy for them.”

After hitting .000 in the first set, Idaho finished with a .209 hitting percentage, while the Redhawks hit .309 in the match. Idaho out-blocked Seattle 7-5 but the Redhawks owned a 63-45 advantage in digs.

Idaho falls to 10-8 on the season with the loss and 3-3 in the Western Athletic Conference. Seattle improves to 7-14 overall and 4-2 in the WAC.

The Vandals return to action next week when they host UMKC and Chicago State on Oct. 17 and 19. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. in Memorial Gym.
