The Vandal Swimming and Diving team made their home debut tonight against conference opponent Northern Colorado and came out with a win by a score of 207.5 to 92.5.

“I’m excited,” Coach Mark Sowa said. “Anytime you can get a win it’s always a nice feeling because wins are not easy to come by sometimes. We’re happy to get a win and were happy to see some improvement from two weeks ago. We still have a lot of work to do but it’s nice to get a win for the Vandal fans.”

The Vandals put on a very impressive show in the pool winning all but four of the events tonight. Coach Sowa was happy with the freshmen class’ improvement winning three of the events tonight and placing in many others. Freshmen Taylor Strachan won the 100 backstroke and the 100 fly. Hannah Stahmer also won in the 500 free.

“The freshmen performed much better than they did two weeks ago,” Sowa said. “I think that first meet is always difficult to try and figure out collegiate racing. I think they had a much more confident approach.”

The team won’t be able to rest for very long as they take on Washington State tomorrow at the UI Swim Center at noon. Coach Sowa hopes his team can keep the momentum going for tomorrow’s race.

“Every day is different and we better not let down from an emotional standpoint,” Sowa said. “We have to make sure that we savor this but turn the page and focus on the challenge that’s ahead of us.”
