MOSCOW, Idaho—The University of Idaho soccer team will close out the regular season with two games this weekend against the regular season Western Athletic Conference champions, Seattle U. The Vandals will start on the road at Seattle on Friday before welcoming the Redhawks to Guy Wicks Field on Sunday.
“We have to step on the pitch and perform as well as we can,” head coach Pete Showler stated. “We are coming up against a formidable opponent who has not lost a WAC game. They have hardly given up any goals this season and that is something we are going to need to turn around in our favor on Friday and do the same on Sunday. We control our own destiny and the girls know that. We have to step on the pitch and produce the goods to get it done.”
Seattle U (13-2-2, 10-0-0 WAC) holds a five game advantage over Idaho in the all-time series, dating back to 2008. The Redhawks are led this season by WAC Player of the Year candidate Stephanie Verdoia, who has 34 points (12g, 10a) on the season. In its last match Seattle U defeated UMKC, 3-0, to clinch the regular season conference title.
Idaho (4-13-0, 4-6-0 WAC) is coming off a 1-0 shutout win at New Mexico State on Sunday. The Vandal win paired with a Bakersfield loss propelled Idaho into the fourth and final conference tournament slot. The Vandals control their own fate when it comes to qualifying for the WAC Tournament. Entering the final weekend games, Idaho holds a two point advantage over Bakersfield in the conference standings. The Vandals can finish with 18 points on the season, Bakersfield’s best possible point total is 16.
Friday’s game is set for a 3:00 p.m. PT kickoff at Champions Field. The Vandals will return from Seattle late Friday night and prepare to close the regular season at Guy Wicks Field on Sunday. The game is set for a 1:00 p.m. start. Sunday’s festivities will begin prior to kickoff with Coach Showler and the soccer team honoring the graduating class of 2013 on Senior Day.
