MOSCOW, Idaho—The University of Idaho women’s basketball team returns to the Cowan Spectrum Thursday night when they take on Western Athletic Conference newcomers Grand Canyon. The Vandals and ‘Lopes will hit the court for the first time in series history at 6 p.m. PT.

Idaho is 6-0 in conference play for the first time since the 1981-82 season and have won six games in a row to start out 2014.

“I think they [GCU] have a really high-powered offense,” head coach Jon Newlee stated. "They get great point guard and perimeter play. They are big inside. They do a great job of moving the basketball and getting everybody involved. They are 13-4 for a reason, because they are an extremely talented basketball team."

Grand Canyon is coming off a 12-day break, not playing since its 88-51 win over Utah Valley on Jan. 11. Asha McDonnell set a new single-game record for blocked shots with six. Six players scored in double figures as GCU led from start to finish and by as much as 43 points to even its WAC record to 2-2 and improved to 13-4 overall. The Antelopes were a red-hot 14-for-28 from 3-point range. Kaitlyn Petersen, who had a double-double with 11 points and 12 assists, was only one assist away from tying a 25-year record.

The Vandals have posted 96 points in their last two contests, outscoring opponents by an average of 34 points. In its last two games, Idaho has shot a combined 71-of-127 (55.9 percent) from the field and 27-of-50 (54.0 percent) from long distance. Junior Stacey Barr averaged 22 points and senior Alyssa Charlston has added 15.5 points per game in last week’s matchups.
