|Idaho Faces Off with Seattle U|
MOSCOW, Idaho— For the first time since last season’s Western Athletic Conference Championship Game, the University of Idaho women’s basketball team will battle rival Seattle U inside the Connolly Complex on Saturday.
Idaho moved to 7-0 in conference play for the first time since the 1981-82 season with its 58-54 win over Grand Canyon in its lone game last week. The Vandals have their first seven-game winning streak since the 2003-04. Idaho has not won eight straight since starting 10-0 in 1985-86, eventually going on to the WNIT postseason tournament.
“I don’t think there is any extra motivation,” head coach Jon Newlee commented. “It is a league game, just like all the other league games are. It is a big one for both teams, like every game is. We are approaching it that way. We are going to have to go over there and play together and play hard and play pretty smart.”
Seattle U was voted the preseason conference favorites for the 2013-14 season by both the coaches and the media. Overall this season the Redhawks are a .500 team, sitting at 10-10. In conference play they have dropped two games, posting a 5-2 record.
Last week Seattle U defeated WAC newcomer Grand Canyon, 89-68. Kacie Sowell led the Redhawks with 19 points, while Ashley Ward grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Wilma Afunugo scored a career high 14 points in the win.
Game time is set for 2 p.m. PT. Tom Purvis will have all the action live on Vandal Xtra.
