Vandal Women Earn 20th Victory To End Regular Season

LAS CRUCES, N.M. ? It was a tough weekend overall for the University of Idaho women's tennis team but the squad ends the season with 20 wins after its New Mexico road trip concluded on Saturday.

Idaho defeated Western New Mexico for win number 20 but fell to WAC rivals No. 15 Fresno State, Hawaii and New Mexico State in the first three games of the trip.

“I think most of our players were pretty focused and wanted to prove themselves after falling to New Mexico State,” Women's Tennis Head Coach Tyler Neill said. “It's good to end the regular season on a positive note and cap a great regular season.”

The Vandals struggled against New Mexico State and were swept 7-0 by the Aggies to start off Saturday.

“I was very disappointed with our match against New Mexico State,” Neill said. “I thought we had a good chance to pick up a win, but we just didn't come ready to play. I think everyone on our team knows we are better than we showed today.”

On Friday, Idaho could do little to stop No. 15 Fresno State and Hawaii. The Vandal women lost 7-0 to the highly touted Bulldogs and lost to Hawaii 6-1.

“Fresno State and Hawaii are both very tough teams,” Neill said. “There's a reason Fresno State is ranked as high as they are. They are tough at every position and don't have any weaknesses in their lineup.”

Women's tennis will have to refocus quickly as the WAC tournament starts in Honolulu, Hawaii on Wednesday.
