DENVER ? The Western Athletic Conference announced its spring sports, as well as freshmen and transfers for all other sports, on Wednesday, and Idaho athletes were mentioned 54 times among the honorees.
Idaho's men's outdoor track and field team paved the way with 18 total honorees, while women's outdoor track and field garnered nine honors. Women's golf earned five honors, women's tennis got four and men's tennis and golf had three each.
A total of 38 Vandal freshmen racked up All-Academic mention for the year, with women's cross country taking top billing at seven selections, while women's indoor track and field had six selections and swimming and diving had five selections.
All 11 members of the women's cross country team earned the academic recognition, while all five members of the women's golf team who met the playing time requirement earned the recognition, as well.
In the fall, 32 Idaho student-athletes earned WAC All-Academic mention, while 30 more earned the distinction in the winter, which gives Idaho a combined total of 114 honors for the 2008-09 school year.
“To have this many student-athletes from the University of Idaho recognized for this honor really is impressive and well-deserved,” Director of Vandal Academic Support Services Ana Tuiaea-Ruud said. “To achieve this level of success says a lot about the type of student-athletes we have on our campus, and I am proud of each one of these individuals, as they represent the Athletic Department, the University, and the Idaho community to the highest degree.”
To earn the recognition, a student-athlete must have completed one academic year at his or her institution and have a minimum 3.00 cumulative grade-point average and also participate in at least 50 percent of his or her team's contests.
