MOSCOW - University of Idaho track and field assistant coach Angela Whyte finished third at the Canadian Track & Field Championships on Saturday, while Vandal senior Christie Gordon came in sixth for the second straight year at the national meet.
Both coach and student-athlete competed in the 100m hurdles and Whyte, a two-time Olympian, turned in a top-three performance at the meet for the ninth year in a row, as she ran a 13.05 and took third. Gordon, a six-time all-WAC performer at Idaho, qualified for her second-straight final round in the 100m hurdles at the Canadian Championships and took sixth with a time of 13.99.
Next up for Whyte will the the International Association of Athletics Federations World Championships in Athletics at Berlin in mid-August. Whyte will make the trip to the IAAF World Championships for the seventh time in her career. She finished eighth in the 100m hurdles in her last trip to the outdoor world meet in 2007.
On Friday, Idaho senior thrower Mykael Bothum launched the shot 52-10 (16.10m) and finished 12th at the USA Track & Field Championships in the women's shot put. The throw was just one centimeter shy of Bothum's lifetime outdoor best, which the 2009 indoor All-American set earlier this season in winning the event at the Oregon Relays.
On Sunday, former Vandal All-Americans Russ Winger and Melinda Owen will be active at the USA Championships in the men's shot put and women's pole vault, respectively, while Paul Dittmer, the two-time Western Athletic Conference 110-meter hurdles champion who just finished his sophomore year at Idaho, will run his feature event at the German Under-23 National Championships.
