Vandals Roll Out First in Limited Edition Series: Schlereth Bobblehead
MOSCOW - What better way to support the University of Idaho Vandals, and honor one of its Hall of Famers, than having NFL great and ESPN sports commentator Mark Schlereth in your house?
Today, the University of Idaho unveiled the first in a commemorative set of Vandal Legends - the Mark Schlereth bobblehead.
Schlereth is excited.
"It's fitting that the school that gave a kid from Alaska an opportunity to play football and get an education is also giving me my first bobblehead," Schlereth said. "I'm really honored!"
Schlereth is the first in a series of legendary Vandals to be featured on a bobblehead. This year, each football season ticket account will come with the Schlereth collectable. In subsequent years, a new bobblehead will be unveiled and be provided to each season ticket account, providing that something extra for individuals who support the Vandals. Each seven-inch high figure will have a distinctive base that will connect to future bobblehead bases to form a commemorative set.
"Mark on the field, Mark in the NFL, Mark on ESPN and now Mark as a bobblehead - we wanted to both have a memorable way to honor him and celebrate the amazing qualities of our Vandal athletes that he represents," said Rob Spear, Idaho athletic director.
Schlereth helped lead the Vandals to three Big Sky titles in his four seasons at Idaho. He anchored the Vandal offensive line on a team that went a combined 37-12 and won Big Sky titles in 1985, 1987 and 1988. His 1988 squad advanced all the way to the NCAA D-IAA semifinal game and he earned second-team All-America recognition. He was selected in the 10th round of the 1989 NFL draft by the Washington Redskins and played 12 seasons, during which he was a two-time Pro Bowl selection and a three-time Super Bowl champion. He was the first native Alaskan to play in the NFL. Since 2002, he has been a popular ESPN analyst for SportsCenter, the Mike & Mike Show, the Scott Van Pelt Show and NFL Live.
