|Blaser earns WAC honor|
DENVER – The Western Athletic Conference honored University of Idaho decathlete Andrew Blaser on Wednesday as the Verizon WAC Field Athlete of the Week after his efforts the week of Mar. 26-Apr. 1 at the Texas Relays.
Blaser, a senior from Meridian, Idaho (University of Louisville), posted a WAC-best score of 7,035 in the decathlon at the Texas Relays. He finished ninth in the event and moved into the No. 12 spot in the NCAA national rankings in the event.
Blaser’s score was just eight points shy of his career best in the event, and his two-day event total included outdoor career bests in the pole vault at 16-0.75 (4.90m), shot put at 37-8.75 (11.50m) and 400m dash in 50.19.
In addition to his career bests, Blaser posted the WAC’s top 110m hurdles time of 14.40. His pole vault mark is second-best in the WAC, his long jump of 22-9.75 (6.95m) ranks third and his high jump of 6-2.75 (1.90m) ranks fourth.
This is Blaser’s first weekly honor of the outdoor season and the second of his career. Blaser was honored once earlier this year indoors and the team had 10 total individual weekly awards during the indoor season.
Vandal men’s and women’s track and field will be split up again this weekend, with the main group competing in the WAR 5 regional dual at Spokane, Wash., hosted by Spokane Falls Community College. Another smaller group will compete in the Stanford Invitational at Palo Alto, Calif.
